Districts selected as Model Teacher Evaluation participants
Six school districts from across the commonwealth have been approved by Thomas E. Gluck, Secretary of Education, to be part of a small group of sites piloting an important element of the Model Teach Evaluation initiative.
The six school districts accepted to join the pilot program are Allentown, Bellwood-Antis, Cornell, Mohawk Area, Northwest Tri-County IU 5, and Quaker Valley.
“As a pilot site, Allentown School District will play an important role in shaping this system by evaluating and selecting valid student growth measures and in testing the tools and protocols that are developed in the next year,” said Superintendent Gerald L. Zahorchak, D.Ed. “We will be working directly with national experts who can provide us with the resources we need and the lessons we learn will help strengthen the process as other school districts are added in 2011-2012.”
“We’re looking forward to working with these districts on cutting-edge efforts that we fully expect will accelerate improvements in student achievement,” said Thomas E. Gluck, Secretary of Education. “It’s an opportunity for schools like Allentown to become a role model for school districts throughout the commonwealth — and perhaps beyond.”
A Gates Momentum Grant awarded to the Team Pennsylvania Foundation provides the commonwealth with the resources to begin work on a multi-measure principal and teacher evaluation system.
State to establish Energy Efficiency Hub
Governor Edward G. Rendell recently announced that a team led by The Pennsylvania State University will receive up to $122 million over the next five years from the U.S. Department of Energy to establish an Energy Innovation Hub focused on developing technologies to make buildings more energy efficient.
Located at the Philadelphia Navy Yard Clean Energy campus, the Energy Innovation Hub will bring together leading researchers from academia, two U.S. National Laboratories and the private sector in an ambitious effort to develop energy-efficient building designs that will save energy, cut pollution, and position the United States as a leader in this industry, according to federal officials.
