Finding common ground: Team PA partners with IUs on standards

Team PA and the state's Intermediate Units are partnering on the Common Core standards.

Team Pennsylvania Foundation has entered into an agreement that utilizes the expertise of the state’s 29 Intermediate Units to help implement the statewide Common Core standards to effectively improve teacher instruction and student learning.

“Teachers are the number one factor in improving student achievement,” said Matt Zieger, Team PA’s Interim President & CEO. “This project aims to build teachers’ knowledge of how to integrate the Common Core standards so their students are prepared for college or a career.”

Pennsylvania is administering the program through Team PA, who received a half-million dollar grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, to engage teachers in the statewide implementation of the Common Core standards.

The Common Core English-language arts and Mathematics standards articulate what students should know in order to graduate ready to enter the workforce or college. Pennsylvania, which adopted these standards in July 2010, is one of 41 states to embrace the Common Core program.

“This grant will leverage the current capacity of the IU staff by training them in the implementation of the Common Core standards,” Zieger added. “The IU staff, in turn, will work with teachers across the commonwealth to incorporate the training statewide quickly and effectively.”

This project will have over 450 high school teachers across the commonwealth participating in developing and delivering high-quality, rigorous classroom lessons and materials aligned to the Common Core English-Language Arts standards.
