LANCASTER – An investment company and an insurance brokerage firm were named the top two “Best Places to Work in Pennsylvania” for 2013 at the awards ceremony held here this evening.

Edward Jones of Lemoyne, Cumberland County, and the Philadelphia-based insurance brokerage firm, The Graham Company, topped the list for the large- and small/medium-sized categories, respectively.

Team Pennsylvania Foundation joined the Department of Community and Economic Development (DCED) and the Central Penn Business Journal in announcing Pennsylvania’s 100 Best Places to Work at the Lancaster County Convention Center.

Governor Tom Corbett attended the event, offering brief comments that celebrated the companies and their employees who made the Best Places to Work list. The governor also personally congratulated each winning company as they came forward to receive their award.

“Business is what really drives this country; Business is what drives this commonwealth,” Corbett said. “It’s what I have been trying to work with – increasing our employment in the private sector all across the commonwealth in Pennsylvania. We’ve been doing that and will continue to do that. On behalf of the citizens of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, I want to thank you for what you are doing and congratulate you all.”

DCED Secretary C. Alan Walker said the department is honored to support Best Places because it recognizes the vast diversity of companies that propel the state’s economy.

“From small mom-and-pop shops to hospitals, mills and major manufacturers, Pennsylvania’s job creators help make our commonwealth the best place to live, work and raise a family. Tonight, we celebrate these businesses that not only contribute to Pennsylvania’s diverse and vibrant economy, but also empower our hardworking and talented workforce to thrive both personally and professionally,” Department of Community and Economic Development Secretary C. Alan Walker said.

Team Pennsylvania is a founding partner and lead sponsor of Best Places to Work since the program began 14 years ago.

“Team Pennsylvania Foundation is proud to sponsor a program like the Best Places to Work in Pennsylvania competition as we celebrate and honor companies that create a positive work environment for its employees,” said Matt Zieger, president and CEO of Team Pennsylvania Foundation.  “This program is also a benchmarking tool for businesses in the commonwealth; it is a high standard of achievement and a distinction that makes businesses more attractive to their clients and potential employees.”

The Best Places to Work in PA includes two groups of 72 companies: small/medium-sized firms with 25-250 employees and 28 large-sized companies with 251 employees or more.

The rankings are compiled through research via a survey that’s sent to employers and employees from hundreds of companies in the commonwealth. Using a formula similar to Fortune’s “100 Best Companies to Work for in America,” the Best Companies Group scores the workplace practices survey along with the employee survey and each Best Places to Work candidate is given an overall score.

To be eligible, participating companies must:

  • Be a for-profit or not-for-profit business;
  • Be a publicly or privately held business;
  • Have a facility in Pennsylvania;
  • Have at least 25 employees in Pennsylvania; and
  • Be in good standing with all commonwealth agencies under the Governor’s jurisdiction.

“We recognize companies during this event that strive for and create a positive and rewarding work environment through innovative practices,” said David A. Schankweiler, publisher, Central Penn Business Journal. “By recognizing these outstanding companies, we are promoting Pennsylvania as a leader in the business community.”

Winners will be highlighted in a special newspaper supplement produced by the Central Penn Business Journal that will be distributed statewide this week.
