PPLAs part of PPL’s support of public recreation around Lake Wallenpaupack, the company will manage power generation at the hydroelectric plant to accommodate springtime fishing on the Lackawaxen River.

“For the safety of anglers and as part of our federal operating license, we will suspend generation on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays starting April 12 — the first day of trout season — through June 14, and also on Fridays during that period for the three hours before and one hour after sunset,” said Paul Canevari, PPL’s community relations director for the Pocono region.

“We want people to be safe and enjoy their experience fishing on the Lackawaxen, which is well-known for its population of wild brown and rainbow trout,” he said. “Working with Trout Unlimited and the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission, we’re pleased to do our part to make the Lackawaxen River safe and accessible.”

The schedule would be altered only if the power plant is needed to control lake elevation during heavy inflows or drought conditions, for emergency power generation or to regulate the water temperature in the Lackawaxen River.

PPL has a program that manages power generation from PPL’s Lake Wallenpaupack hydroelectric plant from spring through September to help keep water temperature downstream of the plant, between river miles 10 and 4, below 75 degrees. The cooler water provides a more beneficial habitat for wild trout as well as the trout stocked by the commission.

The 5,700-acre Lake Wallenpaupack provides water for the Wallenpaupack hydroelectric plant, a 44-megawatt plant near Hawley that has been generating clean, renewable electricity since 1926.
