TEAM PENNSYLVANIA RELEASES PENNSYLVANIA NUCLEAR ENERGY ROADMAP TO ADVANCE ENERGY LEADERSHIP

A coordinated strategy to bolster Pennsylvania’s national leadership in nuclear energy by mobilizing its existing fleet, industrial supply chain, and technical expertise

HARRISBURG, PA – May 7, 2026 – Team Pennsylvania, the Commonwealth’s nonpartisan, nonprofit partner dedicated to accelerating economic growth, released today the Pennsylvania Nuclear Energy Roadmap, a comprehensive strategy to align stakeholders and drive coordinated action to strengthen Pennsylvania’s position as a national leader in nuclear energy.

“I’m an all-of-the-above energy Governor, and under my leadership, we are restarting Crane Clean Energy Center nuclear plant and bringing 835 megawatts of clean energy back onto the grid while creating thousands of good-paying jobs. This Nuclear Energy Roadmap builds on Pennsylvania’s longstanding energy leadership to ensure the backbone of America’s nuclear future continues to run through our Commonwealth,” said Governor Josh Shapiro. “Ever since the nation’s first commercial reactor came online here in Shippingport in 1957, Pennsylvania has led the way with the workers, the capability, and the will to lead the nation in building out the nuclear supply chain, and under my Administration, that will continue for years to come.”

The roadmap outlines an actionable framework to support both the modernization of Pennsylvania’s existing nuclear fleet and the deployment of advanced nuclear technologies. Developed in collaboration with more than 70 leaders across 50 organizations, the roadmap reflects a collective vision for leveraging Pennsylvania’s existing nuclear supply chain capacity and industrial heritage to secure Pennsylvania’s leadership in a rapidly evolving energy landscape and help set direction for what comes next.

“I applaud Team PA for their work to strengthen Pennsylvania’s position in nuclear technology and nuclear power,” said Senator Dave McCormick. “As the second largest generator of nuclear power, Pennsylvania stands ready to lead a new era of cheap, reliable baseload power. Our Energy and Innovation Summit, along with Team PA’s roadmap, helps show us how to build on that foundation and create great-paying jobs across the Commonwealth.”

Five strategic goals anchor the roadmap, each focused on a critical dimension required to expand nuclear capacity by mid-century: strengthening leadership and collaboration, sustaining and modernizing the existing fleet, enabling deployment of new technologies, growing Pennsylvania’s industrial supply chain, and building a future-ready talent pipeline.

“Pennsylvania is coming from a place of strength on nuclear energy innovation,” said Abby Smith, President & CEO of Team Pennsylvania. “This plan is about coordinating our existing assets and sending a signal that we have what’s needed to continue to compete nationally and globally.”

The commonwealth has a demonstrated legacy as a nuclear energy leader. As the home of the first full-scale commercial nuclear power plant at Shippingport, Pennsylvania has built decades of experience in the nuclear industry. Today, with the second-largest operating nuclear fleet in the nation, a mature nuclear supply chain supporting operators across the country, and a strong foundation of university-based research, Pennsylvania is well-positioned to translate this foundation into sustained leadership.

The infrastructure and expertise needed for nuclear-grade manufacturing already exist in Pennsylvania and have for decades. Pennsylvania’s manufacturing supply chain supports nuclear facilities nationwide, providing component parts and services that enable deployment well beyond the commonwealth’s borders. This capability provides a practical pathway to expand domestic supply chain capacity and positions the commonwealth as a critical partner in national and regional nuclear deployment. The opportunity now is to better align and scale these capabilities to support both the current fleet and future nuclear deployment.

The roadmap is designed not only as a strategic framework, but also as a call to action for partners across sectors to align efforts and move toward implementation. As a convener committed to collaboration and building the cross-sector partnerships required for transformational change, Team Pennsylvania invites partners across sectors to join in implementing the strategies outlined in the roadmap and in positioning the commonwealth as a national leader in the future of nuclear energy.
