Old Power Plants, New Possibilities

FEATURE
Many power plants across Pennsylvania have closed over the years, but some of those properties still have valuable infrastructure in place: transmission lines, roads, rail connections, and access to water. The Pennsylvania Accelerated Transmission and Energy Redevelopment (PATER) Study is exploring how these sites could support new energy investments and economic opportunities.
A preliminary report released by the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) identified 21 promising candidates for further evaluation from an initial pool of 76 retired power plants:
- Nearly all are within about a mile of high-voltage power lines
- All but three are near an active railroad, and all but two are near a major highway
- All 21 are close to high-speed fiber internet lines
- Nine have more than 100 acres available
This month, Team Pennsylvania joined our partners at the PUC to share the preliminary findings and engage stakeholders in a discussion about the opportunities ahead. As the study moves into Part B, the focus turns to evaluating which sites offer the greatest potential for redevelopment and how Pennsylvania can make the most of these existing assets.
